Finish Co-Reqs before the Program or During?

Published

Hello Everyone,

I have been debating this for a little while, just wondered if I could get some opinions on the matter! I am hoping for a fall start date at PJC (Pensacola Junior College) and I have 3 Co-reqs I still need to finish: Micro, Nutrition, and A&P 2!( I hear that it's better to get them done before the start of the program) I planned on taking 2 this summer at night, while working during the day, before I started the program, but I can't because the classes are at the same times! The online version of Nutrition at my CC, is said to be impossible to pass, it's higley reccomended to take the class on campus. So my dilemma now lies in... should I quit my job in May to finish all three co-reqs and start the program with just my Nursing classes, or do I stay in my job til August and and take one class, and then try and take the other two classes with my Nursing classes in the program? I am just confused beacuse I want to do both! I want to stay at my job long enough that they can find a good replacement and so I can make good money, but I also want to get those classes out of the way, so that I can go in Stress Free (well, with less stress that is)! Oh and I will stay til at least May 1st, because we are in a middle of a large project at work, and that is when it should be finished, then schools starts May 6th!! Thanks, any advice or info would be helpful!

Can you take any of them next summer?

The program that I am trying to get into, is a 16 month ADN, and it has no breaks, so I could take it with my Nursing classes, but I heard that at PJC the summer is the hardest . I wish my CC had more night classes, that would make it much easier!!

Personally, I would try to get as many co-reqs finished as possible before you begin in the nursing program. Micro and AP2 are very time consuming and can be very difficult depending on the professor. I haven't taken Nutrition, but I hear that it is fairly easy.

I'm hoping to begin in the nursing program at Edison State College in May. Our first semester is basically an introductory semester. We only have 3 hours! Intro to Nursing and Intro to Pharm and Math Calculations. If this is how it is at PJC then I'm sure you could add in an extra co-req or two. I did see that your program is only 16 mos so I'm betting that you will have more than 3 hrs that first semester!

Good luck with your decision :)

See if you can talk with any students who are further along in the nursing program. Find out how difficult and time the first semester is so you can make the best decision. For example, my first semester in nursing school wasn't all that bad. I took one (easy) online co-req in addition to the nursing classes and I could have taken another co-req as well if needed be. On the other hand, I have read posts on here where other students' experiences were much different. First semester was just as difficult and time consuming as the others and having additional classes on top of their nursing courses would have been a bad idea.
