once i finish my associates in nursing science..?

Published

okay so i'm starting school at Miami Dade College this August.. i met with an advisor i'm taking some of the essentials like nutrition, human growth and development, chem for health science/lab, and college algebra. i'm new to all of this and i find myself pretty much clueless! if anyone could help me out i'd be so thankful (because i have a couple of questions :o)

1.) should i take on another class? this semester i'm only taking 13 credits.. i am a head of the game though-i completed 15 credits already from AP classes in high school

2.) this one may sound stupid--but i need to ask: once i complete my 60 credits do i become a nurse? or am i taking pre reqs to start school to get my BSN? i read everywhere but i just keep getting more confused!!

3.) if you happen to live in the Miami area or if you go/went to MDC can you give me advice?

i'd appreciate any input you can give me!! no need to answer all three questions just the ones you feel like.. thank you so much---:redpinkhe

Hi Sofia.Garcia…

To answer your first question, it depends on what you feel comfortable with taking. Just remember that you will want to perform well in your prereq courses before applying to nursing school. In other words, only take the number of credit hours you feel comfortable in completing well. Finishing school should not be looked at as though it is a race. The first person finished doesn’t win a prize.

Okay, so let’s answer the second question. You will need to complete your Associates degree. After you complete the degree, your school will send a form to your Board of Nursing indicating you completed the educational requirements to sit for NCLEX-RN. After you take NCLEX-RN and pass, you are officially a Registered Nurse. You can become an RN either by earning an Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree.

I hope I answered all of your questions. If you need anything else, let me know. Good luck in your educational pursuit.

Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 are going to be your harder prerequisites requiring much more study time (IMHO) to do well in them. Make sure you take lighter loads when you are covering these classes.

First, congrats on starting this journey!

So I think this semester you have a great class load. If you add more science (especially with labs) you might struggle.

And as far as completing those 60 units, that's what's required to transfer to a Nursing program at a university (BSN). You only need the pre-reqs to apply to a Nursing program at a community college (ADN). Most nursing programs are 4-5 semesters on top of pre-reqs and/or general education depending if you go to a CC or a U.

Try to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA to remain competitive, as nursing programs are VERY impacted and schools have there pick of the best candidates. It could also potentially take 2-4 semesters (1-2 years) of applying to Nursing school to be accepted.
