Finding a job

I'm going to be moving to a new state in about a month or two. I'm wanting to make the switch to psych nursing. I currently work in a low acuity ICU, but after close to a year have decided it is really just not for me. I've always been interested in working psych, so I would love to give it a shot. I also have 4 years of a mix of M/S type units.

Any tips on looking for a job, besides the obvious hospitals? Just search for any inpatient psych centers, rehab places...? I'm guessing not everyone advertises open positions on a website. Should I just try calling around and ask if they hire RN's? I know that one of the hospitals where I live now do not post jobs, they just accept resumes.

I am going to apply to medical positions at the local hospitals just in case. But I would love to be able to make the switch when we first move. I know otherwise I would have the option to transfer after a period of time if a position opens. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Try going to your states department of public welfare website. There you can apply to any Psych RN postings at their State run mental health hospitals. As a state employee you get awesome benefits and get paid much more than if you were to take a psych position at a hospital. I don't know where you live, but around my area they are desperate for psych RN's just about everywhere!

Thanks! We actually decided to stay put for awhile. I got a transfer with my corporation, actually just started yesterday in psych. So when we do decide to move, it will be with experience which should help. But I will keep that in mind when the time comes.
