Finally finished my RNBSN and not going quite as planned

I hope this doesn't drone on, but just need to share with fellow nurses and get some feed back. I started my nursing career as an LVN..I was a strong nurse on a very tough (renal diabetic) unit. It was hard work and I loved it. I was in my later 30's by then. Keep in mind I had always wanted to continue on and get my RN, just kids etc..you know the old story.

I made a decision to go into special ed in the school setting, super easy job (hard to adjust) and great hours and vaca when you have a family. Fast forward a few yrs with a divorce included, and I decided to go back to school. Keep in mind, when I left acute nursing they were practically begging us to come to work. With just me and my youngest at home, I started back to an RN/BSN program...it took 5 years, but I did it. The whole time (except for occational per diem here and there) I stayed at the school position. I was confident I could always walk in and get a job, especially now that I had that RN/BSN. Well, we all know things changed drastically. It took about a yr to find something f/t and solid, Im now a PHN for my county, doing case management for childrens services.

I always thought I would find my way back to acute, but Im treated as a brand new nurse, plus it occured to me...my age! Im 51 now (what?!) So I have to think retirement etc...right?? Plus those damn student loans..I feel like maybe the case management could grow on me , Ive been there since aug. but my heart misses that patient contact.

Anyone else relate? how did you handle it?

Thanks!!
