I just got accepted into the University of Calgary Nursing Program today, two months before the start date. This year, there were budget cuts because the government wanted to allocate less funding to the university and so as a result, there were less spots. Because there were less spots it was more competitive. People who were accepted were getting kicked out. I had an 87 average and was put on the waiting list for the University of Calgary, and was rejected from Mount Royal University (which was my first choice). Because there were several nursing hopefuls rejected, these ¨rejects¨ applied to Practical nursing in great numbers. I was one of the rejects and was rejected from Bow Valley Practical Nursing because it was full. Ugh!! I wasn´t going to give up though. Even though I was waitlisted in the University of Calgary, rejected from Mount Royal and Medicine Hat RN programs and Bow Valley College Practical Nursing, I applied to the May start date for Bow Valley College Practical Nursing. (By the way I still haven´t heard back from them) I. was just about to apply to Health Care Aide, which is the Canadian version of a CNA and honestly if I was rejected from that, I would have been a paramedic, medical assistant or lab tech. I want to be in a fricken hospital and be around medicine and heal people. If I was rejected from all of those, I would go back to upgrading school, upgrading my high school marks and try again until my parents die, at which point I would get a job at Macdonalds so that I wouldn´t starve to death. I woudln´t be able to heal others but at least I would be alive. My parents are still young though. But I digress.... I overslept today and woke up at two, and about an hour later my parents came home and checked the caller ID, and ecstatically yelled at me to call back the University of Calgary. I told myself ¨Whatever, they probably just want to formally reject me by phone¨. Well actually.... they accepted me, and I acted like a crazy, happy person, and made the University Secretary nervous. Oh well. I actually got in!!! But just barely, as not many people with lower marks than me got in. Actually I doubt there were any with lower marks than me that got in. And I had an 87%. Anyways, the reason why this is posted in Prenursing, is because I don´t actually get to take real nursing courses the first year. I´m taking the pre-reqs such as: Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Eng, Stats, Philosophy, and about 5 other random courses of which I can choose anything, (even Astronomy if I wanted to). It´s five courses per term, of general studies for the first year and then 3 years of concentrated nursing courses of which only the last two have hospital clinicals. I´m super excited and I get to heal people and have autonomy and do exclusive medical procedures that Practical Nurses don´t get to do. Yay!!! :)
I would just like to add, that I applied to the University of Calgary in January. It took 6 months to hear back from them.
