Feeling discouraged in Nursing school.

Published

Hi there! I started my nursing program Aug '18 and I am currently at the halfway mark through my first semester. I am maintaining an B average in my classes and passing all skills check-offs. My program is accelerated so you already know its a ton of material to lecture, grasp and learn in such a short period of time. I am overall proud of my progress, however I started my clinical rotation last week and I feel like a "lost puppy". As far as caring for my patients, I understand that. Assessing for pain and comfort, making sure to pad bony areas to prevent skin breakdown, assessing vitals, etc. Thats a piece of cake. But the paperwork is giving me a run for my money. Trying to write in "nurse language" is so difficult and I am starting to question my cognition. Just to listen to my classmates of how easy forming their care plan is really bothering me and I am starting to feel inferior to my peers. Everyone brags about they received A's on tests/quizzes. Its sort of like an "Im better than you because I got an A and you got a B" type of attitued! Im sick of it! Im stressed out! Not to mention that I have my drug math test in 2 weeks and I MUST make a 100%. I AM TERRIBLE AT MATH!!! Even with practice, I am still terrible at math. Even listening to my peers talking about how easy the drug math is gets to me. I dont think I will pass drug math or clinical. I just dont. I literally freaking out right now because I have a test tomorrow and Im not sure how I will do. If anyone has gone through this/going through it... Please!!! For the Love of GOD!! HELP ME!!!!

Just take a minute and breathe. First of all don't listen to those bragging about how great they are doing because there are areas they are likely struggling in but they won't brag about that. Nursing school is like a big roller coaster, you will be up one minute and down the next because you are learning so many different types of skills. Focus on one task at a time. If you need help with the math calculations get it and practice over and over. When you take the test make sure to carefully read the question and answer the question they are asking. Some of the math test is seeing how closely you read directions because in the real world you may get an order written that is different than you are used to. Just for the record I hate writing notes to this day. I've been a nurse for a few years and will read some of my peers notes and think I wish I had written that. Practice will make it easier. Give yourself a little Grace!
