Exploring my options

Published

I am one month away from receiving my (hopefully) acceptance letter into my community college ASN program. I have a 3.8 GPA, a 96 on the HESI and all that's left to do is anxiously await the answer. I know that I don't want to stop there. A local university in my area offers a BSN to NP track that I've always been interested in as far as my long term career goals. A nurse practitioner has always been someone I've wanted to become. Right now, it's in the far distance but I am still wanting to explore my options. I know a little bit about the different specialties I could go into but not much else. I've worked with kids for 12 years (daycare, then babysitting agencies). I know I want to work with children but I'm not closing off my interests to anything outside of that. I don't want to limit myself so much that finding a job would become a problem.

I grew up economically disadvantaged and its my mission to do what I need to do to be comfortable in life. I'm 24 years old, single with no kids and would like to take full advantage of my time in school and establish myself. What kind of specialties did everyone go into? Why? What did you want to get out of it? I love hearing from people who have gone to school and are in the field, so anything you'd like to share about what drove you to do what you do, please share! Good or bad!
