Exciting news for nurses who want to be self-employed

Published

There is exciting news for nurses who want to become independent contractors and for nursing associations that want to provide services to this segment of the profession. The Independent Nurses Association (INA) was recently formed to help nurses to gain the business knowledge necessary to operate in a self employed environment.

INA is also offering to collaborate with other nursing associations to assist them in developing a program to help their members become independent contractors.

The organization has developed a strong line of services and products that allow a nurse to obtain all the information, licensing, insurance and education to pursue an independent role. Resources that are available through the "Independent Contractor Management Program" includes development of a professional portfolio that includes licenses, background checks and insurance policies, providing assistance in marketing, contracts and finances, continuing education on how to be self-employed, and a billing operation that provides advance payment for nurses as contract shifts are worked.

According to Nick Strecker, the Executive Director of INA, many nurses have remained out of the market or have struggled with being a full-time employee because they did not have the expertise to be an independent contractor, and some found it financially difficult because of the large fees paid to agencies. INA has substantially reduced the cost of being self-employed and is making it affordable for nurses to control their career.

While there are many exceptional organizations representing the nations nurses, most are aimed at full time staff nurses. INA is offering to collaborate with nursing organizations to assist them to develop a program that will enhance the services for those desiring to be self-employed nurses. Strecker tells me they are finding significant interest in the nursing profession and INA wants to share their expertise with sister organizations by providing them as a membership benefit to their nurses.
