During lecture today, my teacher said that the Baseline Fetal Heart Tone is the "average rate of Fetal Heart Tone per minute". I noticed after class, however, that in her typed-out lecture notes state that the Baseline FHT "assesses the average rate for at least 2 minutes within a 10 minute window." So I'm wondering - does that mean that those 2 minutes can be non-consecutive, just as long as it all occurs within 10 consecutive minutes?
Also, in my textbook, it says that to determine the baseline FHT, "two FHR strips of at least 10 minutes each should be taken and compared before a baseline is established". For one thing, I would imagine that's an awful lot of paper...but why all these differing definitions? Of course, I'm learning that that's just the way nursing school is...still...any thoughts on this?
