Hi everyone!
I am applying to the nursing program at UIC and I have a couple questions if anyone happens to have answers!
I am a recovering alcoholic and I feel that a lot of my strengths and experiences I have been blessed with through the AA program are what could really set me a part from other candidates. However, the school may see this as a downfall.
I am torn if I should disclose this information. I am leaning towards not sharing it. My brother is an alcoholic/addict and got clean a few months before I did. I could share what I have learned from helping him grow in sobriety instead of throwing myself under the bus. I want to be honest, but I don't want to destroy my own chances. I just feel so strongly that this is a positive edge I have been given.
Another idea would be to use AA principles in my essays without actually disclosing that I am alcoholic. I could mention topics such as open-mindedness, acceptance, willingness, honesty, service, etc. It's just hard to back up the fact that I have those qualities without sharing my experience.
Also, I have no real concrete healthcare experience other than that of helping the newcomers at treatment facilities at meetings- if that would even count...Any ideas on how to tackle not having real healthcare experience? Is that going to ruin my chances?
Okay I'll shut up now. Please comment if you have any suggestions or ideas. I really appreciate it. :)
