I found out about 10 years ago that I am HbsAg positive . I suppose I was infected with an hep b virus by vertical transmission at birth. Apart from my lab findings, I have never been ill or experienced any related problems . However, I often monitor my status with an hepatologist routinely and thus far no medical complications or concerns have been raised. Also, I ‘ve been practicing as a nurse for over 10 years in North America (Canada) and it wasn't an issue with my employer upon hire , and of course universal precautions is an essential part of my practice .
Recently, I applied for a nursing job in the U.S and have just been offered an employment , subject to a satisfactory outcome of my pre- employment screening . I intend to declare my hepatitis status and to also go with my medical records when I go for this medical screening. I'm wondering if my hepatitis B status could impede the final hiring ?. My pre-screening interview with occupational nurse is imminent and I‘ll appreciate your thoughts. What are my likely chances of getting the offer withdrawn by virtue of being hep b positive? Thank you for sharing thoughts
I believe I read a thread about this topic before and nurses from the US chimed in that their own + status had not affected their hire. I am not 100% sure though, you could try searching the archives while you wait for someone from the US to comment :)
