Where are you???

Hey where are all you ER nurses??? I know your out there. :p

I've been doing ER for quite a few years. What a cool job! I did burn out, though, a few years ago after there was a merger of two other hospitals in the city where I was working, and one ER closed. Guess what? Our census nearly doubled since many who went to the smaller place didn't want to go to the "big house". And yeah, you guessed it again, we had just "downsized" our staff. More patients, less staff. #$&%#@!! I took off several months, did some cool travel stuff, and now work as a travel ER nurse. Seems to work for me for now.

Hello all.

I won't be starting nursing school until this fall, but ER/trauma is my goal. I've been a paramedic for 13 years and have to decided to finally become a part of the "Definative Health Care" that we rush to get our patients to within that golden hour.

I am pretty new to this forum, but would like to make a request from all of you. I would love to have a "mentor", of sorts as I go through this new endeavor. Any hints, words of wisdom, etc... that you are willing to provide will be welcomed graciously. I know I have a lot of work ahead, but I think my EMS background will give me a leg up.

If anyone out there is interested in keeping in touch with me as I do the nursing thing, please let me know.

Gregory.

Gregory-

Great! And wecome to the boards! I too was on the get em there quick side of the house. I found that while my training helped me with tasks and critical thinking. I went in a little to self assured, the nursing side is a whole new world. Try to be patient and try really hard not to use the phrase well that's the way we do it as paramedics. I think the biggest adjustment was remembering this isn't a pt with a gunshot wound this is a gsw on a human who may have other issues :health welfare, other children. and we as nurses have to treat all of that. It's in some ways a slowerpace then as a paramedic and in other ways faster cuz ya got see the whole human in that span of time you have em in the ED.

I look forward to seeing your posts. I'll be off the board for about 3 weeks- getting married today then hittin the honeymoon in the Big Easy. Goodluck

good luck in your endeavor! I did ER for 7 years before heading back to my first career in CCU. It was great for rounding out my skills. Nice to have nurses who were medics. Worked with many who retired from FD being career NREMT-P's tehn went back to school & had a second career in nursing. They seem very happy with their decisions.:D

We are all pulling OT.
