In your facility, what procedure do you teach pt on how to disconnect themselves from the machine in case of emergency evacuation? Any idea about a emergency evacuation kit that pt. can use to disconnect?

When I worked dialysis (about 10 years) we did a monthly mini inservice with our patients.. even had a company provided video they all watched explaining emergency evacuation.
We taught them where to meet outside the building, and how to take themselves off the machine. We had a ziplock baggie on each machine with 2 clamps and gloves.
In a true emergency, they need only to know to turn off the bloodflow pump, clamp their lines, reclamp with the scissors clamps, twist off the lines, and out the door they go! We explain that in these cases they will not get their blood returned to them as time would not allow for this. Staff will have a supply of NS outside should anyone need it to raise BP, etc.
We went over our emergency procedures each month faithfully, and made sure our patients understood how to take themselves off the machine, and where to exit the facility, where to meet outside the building.
Staff would stand by to assist those who were truly unable to help themselves while all others would be expected to do for themselves.
Hope that helps. :)
