I just signed my consent for surgery and didn't realize it was the consent. It was an electronic signature like signing for a UPS ppackage. I was not shown the entire e-document, after I signed in he scrolled up to the top. I realized what I did, thought I would get a copy but I didn't. There was no real discussion and the attending interrupted the resident several times. It was a crazy busy day. I had so much on my mind and so much to think about. I don't feel that it was informed consent. I almost feel tricked. Thoughts?

Write a letter to the medical director of the facility and to the chairman of the surgery department explaining what happened and what your thoughts are.
Letting them know about a problem will help them to figure out if it is limited to this one surgeon, or if it is a systemic problem, and then they can fix the problem.
Before you go back for surgery, the nurse must assess for understanding of the procedure. It you do not know what we are doing to you (and you are awake and aware), there is a problem that the nurse will address.
