Just wondering how much time those of you who are nursing staff educators spend on the unit with nurses. (Not staff meetings, gathering for an in-service but actually on the unit with nurses who are engaged in patient care) I heard a rumor that the nurse educators where I work are going to be asked to spend the majority of our time on the unit with nurses as they are working. I already spend a lot of time doing things like just-in-time training and observing nurses' work flow to develop training and improvement projects, but don't like the idea of interrupting nurses while they are working to do education. I feel like they are often distracted and not very receptive when I have to do this. I would rather teach during times when they are not assigned patients or officially have another nurse covering for them. I also feel like I need to spend time in my office because I have work I need to do! Does anyone have experience being asked to spend a great majority of time on the unit with nursing staff as they are working? How has it worked out?
