Does your OR have an educator?

If so, does the educator ever do cases or give breaks? What hours does an educator work?

Featured Replies

We have an OR educator. I know she gets in at 7am with the rest of us. No sure how late she stays. I'm pretty sure she puts in a 40 hour week (at least). She never does cases or gives breaks.

Hi,

We have 1 FT educator and 2 PT educators.

Yes, they do cases when needed.

Their hours are FT goes from 7a til 4ish, then 1 PT starts at 10a, the other PT starts at 7a as well, but I do not know how long each stays.

Hope this helps

Yes, we have two educators. The last three OR's where I worked had 1 educator each. None of them ever gave breaks or worked in the rooms. With the exception of the educator that taught my perioperative class, I honestly don't see the educators doing much. They're responsible for making sure we all have our certifications, CEU's, and such up to date, but other than that I haven't found them to be very useful at all. Whatever it is that they're doing all day, it doesn't seem to have much to do with the daily running of the OR.

We have one educator full time and another one who is there part time. You never see them in the OR teaching or helping out. They do orientation with you then it's the nurses in the OR's responsibility to educate you. They organise some inservices for nurses, but they also organise this for medical staff we well. Our educators seem to spend a lot of time teaching med students how to scrub which really annoys most of us because they aren't teaching them very well (they always contaminate everything and need help with putting gown and gloves on which I don't have time for ).

We're too small. We don' need no steenkin' educator!

We have one educator. She actually may be getting a helper, though.

She works full-time 'at least'. She is on salary.

Edited to add: No, she doesn't work in the OR at all to do cases or give breaks.

We have 1 full time educator. She does orientation and trust me you don't want her in the OR. She very rarely gives breaks or lunches. She follows that AORN manual to a "T", last I heard she got on someone because their table wasn't 12 inches from the wall. The scrub said it was like 11 and a half, LOL. She also does a lovely job making signs for our OR that say Merry Christmas, Congratulations on passing the CNOR, etc. It's a joke...I want that job...LOL

Wow!! We may work in the same OR. Our educator does NOTHING!!! She eats alot of p'nut butter and crackers and makes LOTS of posters and signs. (like any of us have time to read them!) Or for that matter want to ~ I believe for nurses week she picked a chocolate theme and had posters for the history of chocolate everywhere!

OK, we definately could be in the same OR, LOL...She also takes polls on different topics in the OR. I could see the chocolate thing happening in my OR as well!

Our educator is presently working on her Masters and works 4 ten hour shifts a week from 0500-1500 but I think that may change to be around 6 or 7 and then be available til the or 1700 mark and present on all 3 shifts. She is always willing and usually available to give breaks or be a pair of hands. Before this she was a circulator in the OR which is great that she was promoted within as she knows what "really" is going on.

We currently have 2 educators at our main facility who are dedicated to the OR. They are responsible for our weekly education meetings and CPR classes, but they are never in the OR unless we are implementing a new protocol or making major changes in some way. Their offices aren't even in the area, they're on another floor.

We have 1 FT educator, works 7-3. Handles weekly inservice, gives breaks if available, runs rooms if needed. She also brings in lots of goodies. Does a good job within the limits we all have to work with.
