Does a non-medical bachelor's degree help get to MSN faster?

Published

Hi,

My husband is an RN with 3 years experience on a med-surg floor. He is considering going for an NP degree. He also has a bachelor's degree in education, obtained a few years before his RN.

I understand some RN to MSN programs may look at his non-medical bachelor's degree as a boost, as it might allow him to skip past some classes, etc. Is this true for all MSN programs? Just some? He can begin the process of inquiring, but any advice on this front in the meantime would be terrific.

Thanks!

It depends on the school. Check the fine print on schools promoting a RN to MSN program for nurses with a non-nursing bachelor's degree. The benefit of a previous Bachelor's is he can transfer credits for courses he has already taken. Even with a Bachelor's in Human Physiology, my MSN program required me to take courses in their BSN program. This could happen if the program offered is pretty new & piggybacked to another program.

Good Luck! Hopefully he wants to become a Nurse Educator! **wink wink** - Biased Nurse Educator
