Does anyone have to switch shoes frequently?

Published

I've been a nurse about 2 years, before that was a tech for 5 years. I have tried many different shoes because my feet hurt after a shift or two of 12s. Even broke down and got the Danskos earlier this year. My problem is whenever I switch shoes, I'm like, wow, this is wonderful, no feet pain! Then about 5 to 6 months later, the feet pain is back. I am beginning to think I should quit buying shoes and just rotate them. Does anyone have to do this? I also wear compression socks which do decrease the pain but otherwise, I just have painful feet :( TIA!

Yep. I try to never wear the same shoes 2 shifts in a row. I currently have 4 pairs in my rotation, and it does help lessen foot pain.

An orthopedist once recommended to me that I switch shoes at least once during the day to preserve my lower extremities. As he explained ... no matter how good a single pair of shoes is, the stress of your body weight is being put somewhere. If you wear the same shoes constantly, that stress is being place on the same spot constantly -- and eventually, that place will start to get damaged and hurt. So, change shoes regularly to keep moving those stress points around. That way, each point gets a little stressed each day -- but not too stressed -- and gets a chance to recover.

It worked for me.

I don't have a job where I am on my feet much anymore -- but I still avoid wearing the same shoes 2 days in a row.
