Do I have a chance if I apply with a C in Anatomy and possibly an A or B in Physiology?

Hey all! Cutting right to the chase: I go to a CC in the LACCD and I'm trying to apply to nursing school in Southern California. It's competitive around here and I was wondering if I had a chance of acceptance with a C in Anatomy and a possible A or B in Physiology. I say "possible" because I'm currently halfway through the course and I have an A in lecture and B in lab. Hopefully, I will end with an A. I have a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Could this garner my acceptance to a program? Has anyone had a similar experience with similar grades? I'm applying for volunteer work in the winter. Can this also help with acceptance? I have yet to take my TEAS exam as well. Can a high score compensate for the C in Anatomy?

I'm going to nursing school in northern CA, so I'm not as familiar with nursing schools in the southern part of the state. As a general rule though, nursing schools in California are incredibly impacted, which means that every grade counts. Look at the requirements for the school you're applying to. Do they have a point system? Do they use a lottery? If it's a lottery system, then as long as you meet the grade minimum requirements, then you have as good a chance as anyone. If it's a point system that gets you in based on GPA, TEAS score, etc, it may be a good idea to repeat anatomy.

thank you! I am thinking of repeating anatomy but my counselor said I should take Microbio in the spring first just in case I don't get a good grade since I can only retake a course once. However, I am genuinely thinking of going ahead and retaking it in the winter anyway. The only reason I got a C in anatomy is because I was lazy and wasn't focused because of a personal situation I'm not in anymore. If I dedicate myself to a course I can actually get a good grade. Is it quite expensive up there in North CA? I've considered studying or working up there as a nurse.

I would suggest working super hard to get that A in micro so you can repeat Anatomy if you only get one repeat! Are you asking if nursing school is expensive in northern CA or if it's just expensive to live? We live in the Sacramento area, and it's not cheap, but not nearly as bad as the Bay Area. The nursing school I'm attending will cost me roughly $20,000 for my BSN. I have heard that it's difficult to find a job as a new nurse, but I think that's a California thing and not necessarily a Sacramento area thing. Good luck!

Also I know everyone has a different opinion on this, but for me Micro was the easiest of the sciences...especially if you've already taken anatomy/physiology...I was surprised at how much repeat info. there was from those two classes. Definitely the most time consuming course, and you have to be incredibly precise in lab in order for everything to turn out correctly, but the content wasn't bad at all. Very conceptual vs. memorization intensive. Also I know a lot of people talk about online Micro classes, but PLEASE do not do it!! You really need on campus for this one if at all possible. It was incredibly helpful having my teacher there to ask any questions I had, and I've heard horror stories about virtual labs.

I'm actually quite very excited for microbio in the spring! I'm just ready to get out of physio because it's so INTENSE as a subject. I've found a good professor for the micro class and it's definitely not going to be an online class. Thank you for your advice!
