Has anyone experienced travel nursing in Hawaii?
What specialty?
Can you share your experience? Love or hate it?
What agency did you work with?
Pros/Cons of travel?
Would you refer someone to do it?
I'm just trying to get a feel of the experience. I need to make a decision soon to pursue it.
Thanks for sharing!

Aloha,
Might be of some help,
First, are you serious about coming to Hawaii, or just testing the waters (excuse the pun)? The hospitals H.R. departments get swamped with inquiries about nursing positions. Mostly mainlanders wanting to escape the crappy weather of their home states. Often, H.R. will have tourist RN walk in's wanting to inquire about nursing jobs. For the most part, they are burned out dealing with these inquires. You will not get very far.
My best suggestion, it write to the nurse manager of your specialty, where you would like to work. (I would not recommend cold calling). Generally, if you do take the time to write, at least you're showing you're serious about wanting the job.
Second, things are different here. They do not care how things are done on the mainland. Even it would make work so much easier, change happens very slowly. You will be the haole (Hawaiian for outsider), and will not be accepted. It will take time; there will be a period where you have to prove yourself to your coworkers. Don't take it personal, just the way it is. Many times individual cannot overcome this stigma, and end up leaving the islands.
Third, the cost of living is outrageous. You will not be able to live the same lifestyle you're accustomed to. Didn't know how bad it was till I left for the mainland. Can't even begin to imagine how difficult it would be now, especially if you're thinking about living on Maui. The place has gone crazy. Local people force to move out for the rich.
Finally, Maui Memorial is now the process being privatized. Things there are in turmoil. Just google news searches the hospital.
In summary, Yes Hawaii is very special place, but not for everybody. Most only seem to last 2 years before they run back to mainland. If you do expect to move there, plan on budgeting at least $10,000 to get established there. This is a conservative estimated. (I know, been there done that a couple of times).
