Hey everyone,
I'm originally from CT and thinking of moving back there. I was just wondering if there is anyone who works in home care and can recommend a decent home health company to work for. Hospital nursing is KILLING me and home care has always appealed to me. I would also appreciate a quick run down of pros and cons in home care. Also, how many weekends, holidays and on-call time is involved?
Thanks!

I work for Caresource in Orange, CT. They have a large diverse patient population ranging from newborns to elderly. I also work for Pediatric Services of America in Shelton. The age range is from newborn to age 18. I know that both are always in desperate need of homecare nurses. How complex your cases are really with as much as you feel comfortable with. They don't push you to work on the vent and trached patients unless you feel comfortable. I make my own schedule and pick how many hours I want a week. I can work 4 hours or 40 hours. Neither has required me to work weekends or holidays unless I choose to work them. No on-call time! Downside....You can get very attached to the kids and when you have to leave them it sometimes can be very hard! I have been working homecare for almost 3 years and LOVE my job! It has provided me with the most flexibility for my family and it is all very rewarding to help the kids and families with the care they deserve in their homes.
Hey,
Thanks for your replies. Are Care Source and Maxim agencies? Is this more like private duty nursing? or visiting nursing? Temporary or permanent positions? PSA sounds interesting. Do you have to have pedi experience or will they train? Is there a ton of paperwork? I'm just looking for a different opportunity. I want out of the hospital. I want to actually be able to spend a little time with a patient and not run around like a chicken with my head cut off.
Thanks for your input!

Yes, they are private duty nursing agencies. They have both temp and permanent positions. They will train if you don't have pedi experience but Caresource has both pedi and adult. You can make your own schedule and work with 1 patient (once I had twins) and not feel like a chicken with your head cut off. Good luck!
