Cyclists Students ---- Panniers for Textbooks

Any other cyclists out there? I used to commute by bike to work and just tossed clothes and lunch in a messenger bag. I commuted by bike for school for a while but used a netbook with ebooks instead of textbooks. However for my program starting mid September most of the books do not have ebook versions so I have to lug giant texts with me so I'm thinking of investing in a set of panniers. I need some that are water proof as it rains nearly every day from October through April here and only every other day after that;) I wold prefer one that can be used as a backpack too but if it just has a handle that would be fine. I hope I'm not the only student to be faced with this problem:)
