Current SJSU Students....I have a question

Published

Do you use laptops in the SJSU nursing program? I noticed they do a whole bundle of digital books, and was wondering what you think I might need for the upcoming year.

Specializes in Care Coordination, General Surgery, Oncology.

I know a lot of people who like to have the physical books, but I just got the e-bundle and then I could have most of my books with me all the time (on the iPad or laptop). I found it very useful to get an iPad and have that be my dedicated school tool.

Many people have been using just the E-textbooks. I bought the bundle with physical textbooks and ebooks because reading from a computer for hours hurts my eyes. I use a laptop for note taking in class, i'd say about 1/3rd of my semester uses laptops or ipads, the other 2/3rds print the powerpoints and take notes the old fashioned way. If you're using a laptop get familiar with editing powerpoints and you will be able to take notes very efficiently. They ask a lot of you in the first semester, tons of assignments to turn in and a lot of random handouts to download off of Canvas. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me, I just finished my first semester.

Hi, for some reason this site wont let me reply to your pm so I cut and pasted Iit here:

We did wear scrubs for skills lab, I believe we needed them by the second week of class. As for solid black shoes you will need them for simulation lab which happens every couple weeks in semester one, they may say something if you don't have them and they notice because we are supposed to be pretending we are in clinicals during simulation.

Most of the teachers do teach through PowerPoint and I recommend either printing them and taking notes on the printed pages or if you have a computer and want to save paper getting good at using the PowerPoint program to take notes on the slides, some of my classmates with iPads also had some really good apps for note taking on on slides. *For Pharm with --------------- you will have both PowerPoint slides and word documents that you will switch back and forth between in class which can be challenging.

If I remember correctly -------------- and -------------- were the only professors who did not want their lectures recorded.

I think the tests are worded in a similar way to nclex questions. I'm not sure about that though.

Some advice...

Pharm- hard class, -------------- expects a lot from her students, both in learning the information and in professionalism in class, be sure to be on your toes in class because she will call on you to answer a question especially if you look distracted or are sitting in the back. Be sure to make a good impression on ----------------because she is your adviser for the first semester and she has really high standards for classroom etiquette from her students.*

PRD is easy just make sure to stay on top of the homework, a lot of it is due online at weird times like Saturday night for example.

Skills lab requires a lot of self teaching so make sure to do the reading in both the Potter and Perry fundamentals of nursing, ATI nursing skills, and ATI online modules. Their is a good deal of time in lab to practice skills, be sure to use this time wisely and if you end up with a lab group that is leaving early or getting distracted in class don't be afraid to go mingle with other lab groups.

Patho is challenging but --------------- is really nice and does a good job of presenting the information. Her lectures follow along well with the textbook and she has a good lecturing style so I actually enjoyed listening to her recorded lectures.

I they ask a lot of us in the first semester and it can be difficult to keep track of all the reading and homework assignments, you really need to be proactive.

I would recommend getting started on the reading as soon as possible, let me know if you need any of the syllabuses or study guides or anything

Thanks, so much. I did receive your PM. It was very kind of you to help and give such great advice!

I'm not sure how the PM's work, but I received yours and then I replied back thanking you.

Well, I guess this works too!

Thanks again

Does anyone know if there's any way of getting around taking the WST test for admissions? I went to a UC for undergrad.

thanks!
