CSUEB? Help!!

Published

I am currently at a four-year university and I am working on the prereqs for their nursing program, however I have decided that I no longer want to be at this university because it is EXTREMELY religious (almost cult-ish) and promotes hatred and judgement towards minorities and homosexuals -- not okay with me at all!

Well, I will be transferring back to my home state in January (I have to do fall semester at this crazy university because we already paid tuition -- I think i can stick it out, however I CANNOT stick it out for another three years) and I DESPERATELY want to go to Cal State East Bay. I've taken anatomy (got an A! I worked my BUTT off, spending 8 hours a day in the cadaver lab) at the four-year university, however I am not sure if that will transfer over to Cal State East Bay. That really isn't a concern for me, because I wouldn't mind taking anatomy again -- I love the subject and I know that it is CRITICAL to have a strong background in anatomy to be a great nurse. I have a 3.77 GPA but I know it will plummet once I get to CSUEB and take all their endless prereqs (there are a bunch of them). I have absolutely no self confidence when it comes to school and I truly believe that I am an idiot and completely incapable of achieving my goals -- yes, I know that sounds harsh, but I just can't make those thoughts go away.

Anyway, I am also terrified about the TEAS exam. I bought a book about it, and I scored 100% in the math section of the practice test. However, I went online and looked at practice questions and they scared me to death. I couldn't do half of the problems! I have not taken Algebra II in 6 years (I'm 21, probably a little too old to just now decide that I want to get a BSN) and I honestly didn't do that great in it. I think I got a C. But I was 15 at the time! Same goes for the science portion of the practice exam. Sheesh. I guess I need to start studying now if there is going to be any hope at all for me to score in the 90's.

I guess I just need some feedback -- a 3.77 really isn't going to cut it for CSUEB, is it? And there is no way I'm going to pass the TEAS. Does anyone have any tips about how to do well? I'm so discouraged... :crying2:

i'm assuming csu east bay is in northern cal.? i've never heard of it until now but i checked it out on the college board website and it seems like the university is one of the easier csu's to get into compared to the ones around me. CSU East Bay has about 10,000 undergrads and has around a 73% acceptance rate where as my lovely CSU Long Beach has about 27,000 undergrads and a 34% acceptance rate. Also CSUEB admits around 40% of all transfers as compared to CSULB's 19%. I know at LB you need at least a 3.5 gpa for admission so your 3.77 looks pretty good! As for pre reqs, all CSU's require the same pre reqs for nursing anatomy, physiology, micro bio, chemistry, speech, critical thinking, english and math. As for the TEAS you don't have to take it until you submit you're ready to submit your application to CSUEB nursing program which is AFTER you take all the pre reqs. I would think the science portion would be difficult since you haven't taken all your science pre reqs yet! As for your intermediate algebra, I believe since you did not complete the class with a B you will have to retake it unless you can pass a math proficiency test and score in a college level math class. That may sound awful retaking it in college but it could help refresh you for your TEAS exam. Your confidence is your biggest problem here, there are no statistics about admissions that I can give you that are going to help with that! good luck and just think POSITIVELY! i don't think your situation is as bad as you might think!

Thanks for replying! Yeah I'm not worried about getting into CSUEB, I'm worried about getting into their nursing program. I am transferring from a different university, and CSUEB claims that they will not look at my high school transcript. My college GPA is a 3.77. But I think you may be right, taking intermediate algebra could be helpful in preparing me to take the TEAS exam. I took college algebra 6 months ago and aced it, however I do not remember much of it  And you're right, hopefully after I take the science classes I will be able to do well on the science portion. But I heard they put stuff about volcanoes and $&*@ on the science part! Haha what the heck? Have you taken the TEAS exam?

no sadly i am no where close to applying to nursing school! i still have at least two more semesters before i can apply. i'm honestly not toooo worried about the TEAS since i have always done extremely well on standardized testing, i'm more worried about my science pre reqs! lol. i can ace pretty much anything multiple choice but doing chem labs is something entirely different and terrifying! i failed chem twice in high school! yikes!

I live 45 min from East Bay... From what I've heard, it's not that bad to get into. You should be fine with your GPA and whatnot. Anatomy will definitely transfer over. My CC has a guarantee transfer thing to East Bay, but I won't be applying there. Also, maybe you should try talking to a counselor at your school about transferring to another school?

As for the TEAS, I take it Wednesday. I've heard that it does have some general earth science questions, but I don't think they're too difficult. The online assessments are TOUGH. I scored a 68 my first time, retook it a few days later, and somehow scored an 86. I've found that a lot of people score much higher on the actual exam than on the online assessments.
