CSU-prospect Student, crossing fingers

 This is my first post so I'd like to say hello to everyone. I recently took my TEAS test and got a 83.5% (ind. cumulative) and got a 90 national percentile. I have a 3.5 pre-req. GPA. I'm just looking for opinions on how competitive that is. I'm really looking to apply at most of the CSU's in nor-cal and a couple in so-cal spring '07. Any suggestions are appreciated.

i am in a CSU. at my school they only require a 3.0 to apply, but tell us 3.5 to realistically have a shot. do you have the co-req's done? what about volunteer experience? living in the vicinity of the school can also add on to your application. how are your letters of rec?

it really depends on so many factors, mainly the group of people you are competing against and their gpa and such, it varies each time they admit. i got into my program with a 3.67 and a 98th percentile on ATI. and i know for certain that there were 20 people below me in the admit pile.

best of luck to you.

Hello--I live in Walnut Creek and just attended the Hayward/East Bay info session where I asked, "at what GPA/TEAS point would it not be worth my while applying to your nursing program." After quailifying her answer that it depends on the given applicant pool that changes year to year...yadda, yadda, yadda....The really nice lady that hosted the information session went on to say that she would encourage all to apply with a Core Nursing Pre-reqs GPA of 3.0 and a teas of 78." She went on to say there are no guarantees, but that at that point you stand a good chance...and that last semester they went down further than that after they recieved non-acceptance replies and opened new seats on their Concord campus...that they actually had to start working down their wait list. Do some internet research and try to attend these info sessions--they are very informative. A classmate of mine was accepted to Sac State last year with a lower GPA than I, so It seems to me with you GPA and willingness to relocate, your chances are very good. I'm carrying a 3.3 from my first degree (lots of units so it would be hard to bring up at this point) but a 3.5 in my core nursing pre-reqs. I'm hoping my chances are good too. Haven't taken the TEAS or NET yet, and haven't done basic math in years. So don't think I'll do as well as you did on the entrance tests. As far as schools in So-cal--I already have a BS in business from San Diego State, and loved my time there. Had a good friend who went through their great nursing program and always talks highly of her experience there. So I would recommend SDSU to any person willing to move. I am a born and raised San Francisco Italian girl with deep roots here, and almost couldn't leave San Diego after I graduated I loved it so much. These days, am a wife with three kids, so I'm pretty much stuck trying to get into a nursing program within the highly competitive Bay Area. I will start applying this comming Fall. Wish me Luck and Good Luck to you Rayfocker (is this a ref to Meet the Parents?).

Sounds like you have a pretty good chance. Good luck to you and let us know how it goes :) I'm trying for Spring 07 admission, too. (But in Texas :))

I am going to start at SSU in the Fall. I got an 88.8 (99% national) on the TEAS. I have 3.5 overall GPA, and a 4.0 in the pre-req's. The other factors are volunteer experience (I had none, but I have my CNA), and your essay's. Oh, and your letters of recommendation...for SSU it's just a check off if you have them, and negative if you do not have them, or they are not positive.

Anyway, I think you have a good chance, all you can do is try! Good luck!

Thank you guys for your insight, advice and share of experience, especially you, Bartolozzi. Yeah, being single has its advantages as relocation is not much of a problem, although nursing admission throughout the state I'm sure can't vary too much as far as competition. I've done a lot of research online and even looked into Samuel Merritt (probably a last option). I always find myself going back to the same websites to see if there are any updates or "good news" but besides that, I just can't help but wait.

I really would like to get into the Spring '07 so I have continuity of school but some of the good schools only admit during the Fall, which means I would have to wait for a year. I guess I can't really ask for much at this point but to be hopeful of being admitted to ANY nursing program. ;) BTW, yes, in reference to Meet The Parents. I was thinking GayFocker, but that would raise some sexuality questions.

I just found out that I got accepted to Cal State East Bay yesterday. I have a 4.0 GPA and I was in the 99th percentile on the TEAS. I don't know what the average GPA and scores were that got accepted this year, but at the info session I went to, they told us last year the average GPA was 3.8 and the average for the TEAS was in the 98th percentile. They also told us that about 800 students apply and 80 get accepted. It went up from 65 last year due to the Concord campus. I also got accepted to CSU Stanislaus. My counselor had told me to apply there because it is a brand new school and many people don't know about it yet, so not as many apply, so you stand a better chance. Also as someone pointed out earlier, volunteer work can help you. CSU East Bay doesn't look at it, but other schools do such as San Francisco State and Stanislaus. I got denied at SFSU because I had no volunteer work. I hope this helps! Good luck to you!! With your GPA and determination it sounds like you will do fine!!
