CSCC [columbus state] Nursing ADN, All about It!

U.S.A. Ohio

Hi Everyone. I have a lot of questions. I am trying to apply for CSCC's nursing program [preferably the traditional track, fiance is going online route]. It is now November and we plan on applying for the April go. We both have BS's from OSU. I was wondering what the recruiters look for, what we could do to set ourselves apart. I also keep hearing about a wait list. What's up with that? It's nowhere on the website. I know we're firmly in semesters now, so maybe that's calmed down? I would love to know the acceptance rate; seeing as on here a lot of people seemed they didn't get in. All help is appreciated! I plan to quit my salaried career to do this program, and have to quit before I apply, so i'm terrified of applying and not getting in. Help please!

I graduated from CSCC's LPN program and have heard nothing good about the RN program. I have a BA (and an MS) and applied to the 2nd degree online program a few years ago, and I wasn't accepted. I e-mailed the online director twice trying to find out what I could do to improve my application and never received a response. My thought is that if the DIRECTOR of the online program can't even reply to an e-mail, the quality of the online program can't be that good.

I've heard from other people who have gone through (or tried to go through) the program. Instructors who try to weed people out, clinical instructors who eat their young, poor administration, etc. Now that I'm done with the LPN, I'm looking FAR FAR away from CSCC for an RN program.

Let me first start be mentioning that I am in the hybrid program at Columbus State. You may see some negative posts on here regarding CSCC's nursing program; frankly, I really don't understand why. I would tend to read those posts cautiously as it's possible some students are disgruntled - for some reason. To try and answer a few of you questions: Unfortunately, I don't believe you will find admission statistics - I simply don't think they post them. As for your chances of admission, it's hard to speak to that as well since I was admitted to the hybrid program. I can give you a few stats regarding myself and friends in the program. My undergrad GPA average was 2.9. The few prerequisites I took at Columbus State, I received all A' - so, my CSCC GPA was a 4.0. Additionally, I received mostly A's in all my science courses as a undergrad. As for the HESI, I scored a 94% overall - between the anatomy, biology, chem, and math, I only missed 4 questions - I thought it was very easy. As for my classmates that I am close to, we all had similar undergrad gpa's and CSCC gpa's. For their HESI scores, I was told 80%, 84%, and 93%. Now, as far as the nursing program goes - and this is where I don't understand the negative comments: I have not had ONE bad experience with the nursing professors or with any of my clinical instructors. This is after completing over half of the program. You see, I am truly of the mind set that you get out of things what you put in to them. I study; listen to my instructor's and professor's suggestions and use their knowledge to benefit my experience. Nursing school definitely takes a high level of commitment. If you commit, and put into it what you want out if it, I am sure you will also have a positive experience. I am sure there are some areas that CSCC could improve on, but I also can guarantee every top university in the country has areas where they can improve. You will find naysayers everywhere - don't let that discourage you in anyway if you read anything negative about Columbus State. I hope some of this information helped and good luck to you and your fiancé. AS

To be fair, I'm relaying some secondhand information. I have a friend who tried to go through the program - she told me about her clinical instructors.

However, the experience about the online program was mine. My undergrad GPA was 3.1, graduate GPA 4.0, I don't remember my exact score on the HESI but I know it was high 90's. I couldn't even get a response from the online program director. I'm not saying my experience is an example of what every student should expect, nor is asmith's - I can only describe my experience as a reason why I personally would never consider reapplying to CSCC.

asmith - are you being paid? I am 5th quarter hybrid and I can't name a single person who likes the program. Maybe traditional is different. We do not get lectures. We aren't told what is going to be on the exams. They banned test reviews because they do not like being questioned. I know some people in 7th quarter right now who said even the ATI rep who came to do their ATI review was appalled at some of CSCC's policies and said they were "anti-learning." In addition, the environment is going BSN only so you're forced to do another 1+ years of school after CSCC before you can get a decent job. Do not expect to be taught anything in the program. You will teach yourself everything. And you can. I have a 3.8 GPA. It is doable. That doesn't make it anything higher than a terrible program. Oh and if you have a bad exam, the instructors will tell you to drop out and ignore friends and family who encourage you.
