New grad considering these two great hospitals for cardiovascular care. CRNA hopeful, though not decided. Have a strong interest in cardiovascular care and know I want to be in the critical care setting. Have been an ICU tech for two years. Had interviews at both places. Need help choosing if ever I get offers. I would have to move for both! I would not like to factor in salary because of the difference in cost-of-living in both areas. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. Included a poll but would love to hear reasons for your choices!

Cleveland Clinic is world renowned and is currently ranked #1 in Cardiac surgery, but there isn't as much to do in Cleveland. UCLA is currently ranked #12 and there is significantly more to do there. The experiences are going to be very similar since they are both world class organizations. But on paper, if I had two candidates that were dead even but one came from Cleveland Clinic vs UCLA, I would chose the Cleveland Clinic applicant.

Thanks for your input Mysticookiebear. I know I will probably be bored in Cleveland but it would also force me to focus on learning. Could be a good thing. The reputation is great and I was really impressed with the unit.

I worked at UCLA, it's a great facility but if they know you want to go for CRNA you won't be offered the job. So, if you disclosed during your interview with Barbara or Brenda don't expect an offer. Cleveland Clinic is great, and there is a lot to do in the area (orignally from there).

Good luck to you. I would recommend taking a look at Wexner OSU medical center; I like their program hands down much better than the Cleveland Clinic.

Ask yourself this: where do you want to live? Do you want to spend $2000+ month for a 400 sq ft apartment in LA, or have a nice house in Columbus/Cleveland? Do you like driving in ridiculous traffic - hence 405 misery..and do you like snowstorms and ice-Ohio?

If you're a new grad it will be hard to come to CA without any experience-new grads in CA are having difficulty getting jobs.

JulesV, thanks for joining the conversation. No, I did not disclose any plans about becoming a CRNA. Not even 100% positive about it being a right fit for me. I think time and experience will tell, which direction I want to take after I gain a few years in the ICU. Both interviews were great. Both areas have pros and cons that I would have to adjust to. Such is life! If I do live in Ohio, which would be an ideal area for a young couple to search for an apartment or home?

I will look into Wexner's program too. Thank you for the recommendation.

My plan is to work in either facility for about 2-4 years before pursuing an advanced degree.

.... I hope you have tough skin

Those CVICU nurses are not known to be very nice..... Very high turnover at the CCF CVICU

OhioSICUrn do you have any insight as to why that may be? A friend of mine who interviewed at another unit (I forget which ICU but not CV) said the manager had mentioned that a lot of their nurses felt prepared to pursue advanced practice education after a year or two. Could this also partly contribute to the fast turnover? It would be nice to get the perspective of the RNs. I am a tough cookie but I am human. I am also new and have so much to learn but I am very interested in the cardiovascular field of nursing and hopefully the more experience nurses are not as bad as you have heard. :nailbiting:
