Shock Trauma ICU?

Specialties Critical

Published

Hello! I recently got placed in the STICU for my practicum. I am so excited as this has been one I have always wanted to do. I was wondering if anyone who works ICU, or specifically trauma and shock trauma ICUs could give me words of advice about starting, what topics I should review and if there are any drugs I absolutely need to know for a trauma floor, that would be awesome! I know vague information, but it is always easier to prepare when you have specifics if possible. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the wonderful world of critical care nursing!

1. Read up and understand the mechanism of action behind vasopressors (dopamine, dobutamine, norepinephrine, neosynephrine, vasopressin, and epinephrine)

2. Try and look up your facility's massive transfusion protocol if they have one.

3. Practice using a stopcock (can't tell you how many times I've seen blood everywhere)

4. Ask a lot of questions

5. Have some fun!
