If you are writing the CPNRE in May 2016 and beyond you already know that the exam will be changing to a computer-based exam.
Apart from the exam format changing there are some basic things that you need to keep in mind as you prepare for the CPNRE.
1. We already know it will be computer-based. So you want to learn as much as you can about the new exam format so that you can be ready. HINT - check on you regulatory authority's website for information and updates regularly as well as ASIs website also.
2. The CPNRE is a competency-based exam. There are 84 competencies tested on the CPNRE. So you want to make sure you know what those competencies are. HINT - they can be found in the back of your 4th edition prep guide in Appendix A or in the CPNRE Blueprint 2012 - 2016. Also download the updated Amendment February 2016.
3. The majority of the questions on the CPNRE are testing application of knowledge (50%) and critical thinking (35%). So spending a lot of time memorizing tons of information will only help you with 15% of the questions on the exam. HINT - You want to do an in-depth core content review so you can comfortably apply your knowledge and think critically on the exam.
4. Contrary to popular belief the Prep Guide is useful. It all boils down to how you use it. HINT - use it as a textbook! Study the structure and format of the questions, pay attention to the topics in the questions and the wording of the questions.
5. To get a feel for the new computer-based CPNRE use the CD-ROM that comes with the Prep Guide. HINT - practice in both testing mode and feedback mode, Also create a performance profile so you can identify and address your knowledge gaps and weaknesses.
Hope you find these CPNRE TIPS useful. Please feel free to add any additional tips you feel others can use and benefit from. :)
