So I am starting back to school to get my BSN, I chose a school that is completely online which is new for me as I have not taken an online class before. I was given the 1st weeks discussion questions and one of them is totaly throwing me for a loop. I NEED SOME HELP..
"What are the principles of scholarly discussion in an online environment? How does this differ from a friendly conversation? How does this differ from a social network?"
I kind of have an idea of what this question is asking but
"What are the principles of scholarly discussion in an online environment?" Is where I am having an issue..

Hmmm...interesting questions! I would say for one, if it's a "scholarly" discussion as opposed to a "friendly" or "social network" discussion, that it's important to stay on-topic and not wander off on tangents to the point that the original topic is lost, and to consider what sources you're using/linking to. There's a lot of great info online but there's a lot of garbage too!
Also (for any online discussion), it's important to keep in mind that tone and facial expression can't be conveyed well online, so it's important not to jump to conclusions about someone's attitude or intention based on what they post. Icons can be helpful but aren't as useful as tone and expression in real life. So it's also important, when YOU are writing your posts, to choose words carefully and include phrases like "this may come off more bluntly than I mean it to", etc., if necessary.
Does that help? I'm kind of making it up as I go!
Yes this help! I was thinking along the same lines as you but just wanted to make sure.
