Could I really be a CRNA?? What do u think???

Published

Ok.. how feasible is this??? I REALLY like the OR and have thought about being a nurse anesthetist. I am in a BSN program now to get my RN. I am doing very well and one of the top students in my class. Here is the problem (if you really want to call it that). I have a mild health condition and take meds throughout the day and eat on occasion. Do you think I could be a nurse anesthetist???? I have a mild heart condition and for the most part do just fine. It does not stop me from doing anything. In-fact- I traveled to Europe two years ago and hiked around and did fine. I just have to have my meds around certain times and eat a little something with it. My RN teachers know I like the OR but they have said 'How are you going to work in the OR when you have to take meds and eat on occasion???' Is the idea of being a nurse anesthetist really out of the question?? :cry:I could use some real honest answers. Thanks.

IMHO, only you can truly answer that question through doing/thinking about things like:

  1. Shadowing a CRNA
  2. Working in the OR
  3. Talking with your HCP
  4. Is your condition going to get worse?
  5. Are there other ways to manage your condition?

I have a chronic illness and am also considering CRNA school in a couple of years. I am about to start working in an adult ICU (I used to be a Pedi NP) and that is my first personal test. If I can not only survive, but thrive, then I am going start trying to decide between getting my Acute Care NP and my CRNA. Also, I have to make sure that my condition stays stable and that going to CRNA school would be worth the time and effort. Although I am only in my early 30's, I know that if left unchecked, my condition could get worse quickly. I don't want to spend 2-3 years in a difficult program only to be able to work less than 5 years after graduation. Also, I do not want to take a spot from someone else unless I know that I am going to be able to practice until retirement!

Thanks. That was a great response. Well, my condition will not get any worse. As long as I can take my meds and eat something (even small) I am Ok. That is a good idea... to try the OR or ICU and see how I do. That is good advice. THANK YOU!!
