I have been following this forum for quite a while. Now, I have to finally post my first question/s here. I am an LPN with a deactivated license so I am going for my refresher course which can be done within 3-6 mos and then followed by my clinicals. My question is, would it be possible for me to right away go straight into a specialty area for my clinicals even if I didn't have any hospital/staffing experience from before?..except for a Rural Health Center experience only with basic nursing procedures like wound dressing, immunizations, etc back in my country. I have come up with this idea because I want to focus on learning my skills in one area as I have the tendency to forget the "general skills" if I get to practise in an acute care/nursing rehab. I was able to state this because I've volunteered working in a long term care for a few weeks and learning different procedures each day confused me. And I think that if I'll focus on a specialized field that I'd probably end up doing a routine..and it would be much better for me. I know that LPN doesn't have too many options to choose from...but as far as what I've heard there are these areas that I can consider: Dialysis center/clinic, diabetic clinic, wound care, etc...any suggestions please of what I have to do? coz I couldn't think of the specialty that I have to go into. I am thinking of visiting some of the specialty clinics within our city next week and see for myself if that's the one that I'd like to go into. I really don't know what to do, I am confused. I don't wanna waste the $2K that my family has to shoulder for my schooling. I hope and pray I can find a place for me somewhere out there. (Note: I have a BSN-RN degree in my country, graduated in the '90's with no hospital experience.) Thank you so much in advance for your help.
