confused new nurse

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site but I could use some advice. I'm a new grad that started my first nursing job in an emergency room four weeks ago. It was and still is a little scary and I'm in desperate need of advice. The ER doctors are not very understanding of the fact that I'm a new nurse and neither are some of the veteran nurses. I am told to perorm tasks and do things that I am not familiar with all the time. I'm trying very hard to make this work because this is where I want to work so if any one could shine some light on how to help make this transition from student to nurse flow a little smoother I'd appreciate it. The biggest problem is that I'm expected to know how to do things and treat problems that I am not familar with and asking thany of them for help seems to be the wrong thing to do?

Thanks:confused:

Hi tote45--

Don't you have a preceptor?

Are you still in your training period?

Does your hospital have a Nurse Educator on staff?

If your preceptor isn't able to answer your questions or pleas for help you could ask for a change of preceptor.

Keep an open mind- don't take people's frustration with your "newness" personally. Keep focused on what you can learn from each of those incidents - not on whether the Doctor or Nurse was emotional about it. Stay safe and start exploring available options for guidance at your hospital.

You are so right. I have asked for a different preceptor. Hopefully it's in the works. I try not to take things on an emotional level but sometimes that's harder to do than others. There is no educator presently but the search is on for one. I know that in every situatuion there is something to learn whether it be the right or wrong thing but it's much harder to absorb information when those that I seek it from are so tough. I usually don't complain but this is so important and I have to get it right.

Thanks for the advice,

TOTE45
