HI!

I NEED YOUR OPINION ON THESE QUESTIONS! PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING,POST IT.

Q1) What is meant when we argue that health and illness are 'socially constructed'?

Q2)Does adopting a sociological approach make the work of a nurse easier or harder?

THANK YOU !!

HI

I'm only very new to being a nursing student - first day was yesterday:wink2: but my first subject is health and health prof. and first topic was health and community health. Kind of posting my ideas to get feed back as well as answer you:p

Q2)Does adopting a sociological approach make the work of a nurse easier or harder?

I would say it would make nursing a patient easier. If you take into consideration all aspects, not just their immediate illness or disease, you get a 'fuller' picture of their life and get a greater look at what could contribute to their personal health.

Q1) What is meant when we argue that health and illness are 'socially constructed'? (didn't really do much on this, but I'll give it a go)

In my readings, we were looking at the ideas of particular areas having greater illness or disease - eg lower income areas (can't think of the right word here:bugeyes:) tend to have greater risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. This could be argued that in these particular areas, health education is lower, and there is less community ownership of health. Something along those lines are where I'm thinking with this one.

As I said, only my second day of being a rn student, so I'm probably way off the mark. Can't wait to see the other ideas around these questions,

Cheers, Zoe

If you have ever taken a sociology class, socially constructed always just means human beings have gave thought to it such as our calender, the days of the week, even time is all socially constructed, so pertaining to health just mean society sets the framework to what is socially acceptable health wise. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I think in a way you are both right. I understand that socially constructed means that society constructs the rules we follow, but society also constructs social classes as well. :yeah: As Zoe said, lower income class has less chance to access the proper health care they need.
