Community college vs. university?

Published

Hi everyone,

My goal is to someday become an army nurse, and eventually become a Nurse Practitioner. My mom thinks university is the best option and to be honest, so do I. I have confidence in my previous GPA from another university, and I've always enjoyed rigorous school work/research that universities assign. I like the low tuition and convenience of a community college, however. Plus, there is always the prospect of transfer.

How do I decide which is a better option for me? How did you all begin your nursing careers? Was anyone unsatisfied with the idea of entering community college or did you like it?

Do you have a previous degree? If so, you may be able to fill in some pre-reqs and then go to an Accelerated BSN program. If you have access to a good community college, I don't see any reason you can't do pre-reqs there. Unless you are going into a 4 yr BSN program, you will need pre-reqs. A cc is a low cost way to get them. You can also get an ASN at many cc. Wherever you decide to go, be sure to check out the program carefully. Whether you are looking at a community college or a university, there are good programs and bad programs. I would definetly go to the community college and transfer to a BSN or MSN program in which I am doing now. The BSN program will enable you to become a RN with less time and money plus you can transfer into a BSN or even a MSN program that will also grant you a BSN along the way. I already have my Bachelor's degree in social work and could have went into the Accelerated BSN program but I work full time and going to a community college instead just convience me better. Well good luck in whatever you decide but I guess just do your research and pick the one that's gonna benefit you more and take everything into the situation not just the status of the degree your going after. ;-)
