Columbus State Online Program

Published

Did anyone apply to the Columbus State Community College's Online program this past week? If you did do you know how long it will take to find out if we are accepted into the program?

My friend applied the previous cycle and just found out last week.

She had a 3.4 GPA from her previous undergraduate degree, 3 years work experience aas a patient care assistant and/or unit coordinator, and a 4.0 at columbus state and was DENIED for the second year in a row.

I was thinking of applying, but I'm instead moving to Cleveland and going to Tri-C. They do first come first serve and only place one semester ahead. I just got placed to start Aug 2010 and the program is only 15 months and you don't have to do a nursing home clinical your entire first quarter.

I applied on the 15th of this month. I don't know how long it takes to find out but I don't know if I am hopeful about it. I have heard people apply with higher GPA's than I had for my bachelors degree and not get in. I am going to go ahead and apply for the traditional program on January 6th. It is easier to get into the traditional program I guess but going to 8am lectures is not going to be fun for me. I have a 5 year old who starts school next year and I am more of a night person. The online would be better for me but I am not willing to wait and be rejected 2 years in a row. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens. I think we should hear something about February. I did think the application was kind of incomplete, all it asked for was your bachelor's degree and your GPA and the essay in 300 words or less.

Keep in mind that while the traditional program is first-come first-serve, they place you into the next open class, which may be far down the road. My friend who I mentioned above applied to the traditional program in 2008 and couldn't get an open class to start until March 2010.

I really don't want to wait that long so if Columbus State makes me wait then I guess I will apply to Chamberlain. I will take all the science courses at columbus state to save money. I could do the bachelors in a little over 2 years at Chamberlain but the high cost is what troubles me. I have considered the Mt. Carmel accelerated but it seems kind of stressful when you have a child and I don't know if I would get in. My undergraduate was a 3.29 and I am currently getting a 3.79 at Columbus State so there has to be somewhere that will accept me.

It is very frustrating. I was pretty confident I would get in, but after my friend got rejected for the 2nd year in a row (the one with the 4.0 at CSCC, 3.4 from her bachelors, and 3+ years patient care experience) I gave up. My application isnt' that strong and if she can't get in... I certainly won't!

I looked at chamberlain, but they seem to be money hungry. I applied and never heard back one way or the other, but never bothered to look into it as the cost was too high. I called about 7 months later and asked to reopen my application. They admitted my file at gotten "lost" and when it was found, they told me I had to repay the application free and resend all my transcripts even though I had already paid and my transcripts were sitting in front of them. Nevermind!!

I have a friend that goes there and they do clinicals at obscure locations sometimes because the school is new and not nearly as reputable as others in the area (Marion Tech College, CSCC, OSU, Otterbein, Capital, OTC...). Her psych rotation was in a jail, and I know a fair amount of students had to commute 1-2 hours away for clinicals because sites couldn't be found in the Columbus area.

Good luck with the online program. I'd also apply to the traditional program. Personally, I'd rather wait another year or two than pay 6 times the tuition for a lesser education.

I don't know why your friend didn't get in because it sounds like she had all the requirements plus much more. Sometimes I just don't understand Columbus State. I am not too happy with them right now. They are taking away my loans after this quarter because I have a prior degree in multimedia from them even though they kind of forgot to put that in my transcript. They didn't believe I had the multimedia degree so I had to send a copy of my degree when I appealed. I went to the graduation and everything.

It is a shame it is so hard to get into nursing school around here. The reason I don't want to wait so long is because I am 39. I would like to at least get my associates before I am 50. Now I know why I waited so long to apply for nursing, because it is actually easier to get into law school. :(

They made me verify my degree even though it did show up on my transcript. You can still get loans. You just have to submit an appeal form every year. I've heard it isn't hard to get approved if you are pursuing a degree.

I believe this is the form.

It is crazy. There is supposedly a nursing shortage, but so many Columbus new grads are having a terrible time finding a job and it is next to impossible to get into nursing school.

I've given up and I'm relocating to Cleveland and going to Tri-C. I hear their program is very reputable and there isn't a waitlist. I'm starting in one year. Newark and Marion are too much of a commute for me, CSCC has too long of a waitlist, Cincinnati makes you pass the state test for a nurse aide and they won't waive that requirement for me... I have 6+ months experience as a nurse aide and I took the course but I'm no longer eligible for the state test and I'm not retaking the class now nor do I want to pay for it. So, off to Cleveland I go!

Good luck! Let me know what you hear from CSCC.

I don't blame you for relocating to Cleveland. I would love to relocate to another place if I didn't have this stupid house. I probably wouldn't be able to sell it if I wanted to relocate and my husband actually has a job here. I heard new grads are having a hard time getting jobs around here and I totally believe it. I tried to get a part-time job as a night stock clerk at Giant Eagle and supposedly there were 15 other applicants wanting the job. I also applied at Lowes, Target and Walmart, nothing from any of them. I have a college degree and I can't even get a job at Walmart around here, it just sucks in this town.

Good luck and congrats on getting into tri-c. I will let you know what happens with Columbus state. :)

HA I know the feeling. I graduated with my bachelors degree in June and I can't find a decent job. I had a great GPA and great work experiences/internships. I've had my resume and interviewing skills reviewed and critiqued by two school's career services and NADA. I got rejected to be a cashier at Walmart... probably overqualified.

I have submitted over 150 job applications on all job websites and my school's career services website and I can't even get an interview. So frustrating...

I'm sorry this is happening to you too. It sucks that we have gone through all that schooling and we can't even get a job at Walmart. You would figure they would hire us because we are motivated but I guess not. It sucks to be overqualified. All I wanted to do was to get a job to help out the household budget to pay for nursing school and living expenses. Luckily I am a glass artist so I can still make some income with my bead sales. Good luck to you, I am sure you will find something. Maybe there are some more jobs in Cleveland. I think Columbus is just too saturated with people needing jobs and there are not enough jobs to go around.
