CNA in NJ/NYC

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Hi! I am currently a nursing student (RN), I reside in NJ. I am looking to take a CNA course, to gain experience and also I need a job lol (Nj rent is so high) . Ok so my question is what is the pay like for cna's for Nj and NYC ? I am almost positive the pay is higher in NYC and commuting wouldn't be an issue for me. I have a small child and tuition, rent, insurance etc is getting the best of me. I do know that cna's are underpaid, but it would be great to be making at least some money while gaining experience in a hospital (hopefully)....... Also if anyone can provide any info on the length of the course, cost and how long it took to find employme t after completing the course that would be great!! Thanks so much !XoXo

Check the State Department of Health web site for Nursing Aids. I had completed Nursing 1 in my associates degree program and had at least a C you can become an aid by the "alternate route". You need your transcript and a few other things, send a letter into the department the address is on the web site and you begin to be lead through the process. That way you don't have to repeat the same basic skills that are in a CNA program. I did it and was certified feb 2012 and have been working as an aid for almost a year and I'm in nursing school. It worked out. Pay is lousy for the amount of stamina required and personal assistance provided found it to be anywhere from 11 to 15 an hour. You do learn a lot and its a great prep for nursing. If you live in NJ, I don't know why you would really want to commute into the city for this position. Look around. K, good luck!

AnnCNA,

thank you for responding ! The reason I was interested in taking the class in NYC opposed to Nj is because I've heard the pay is more. Omg my rent is 1500 alone! Idk how accurate this information is but I have also read that CNA in NYC hospitals make around 18-20/hrly. ....... How long did it take for you to complete the can class and what was the cost , if you don't mind sharing.....thanx again !!!!!!

Specializes in alziemers.

In nj you can practice as a student nurse pretty much doing cna/pct work as someone n this thread already mentioned once you complete a certain module. The pay is from 10 to at the most 14 or 15 an hour (if you're lucky!). I have 5 years experience and have not found anywhere here in south Jersey that wants to pay me more than 13 for full time, no benefits. The most I ever made was 16 per diem at an ltc at the shore, it was a rough job though-very understaffed :(

With the cost of commuting into the city even from North Jersey, I don't think it would be worth it unless they legit payed you like 18 to 20 an hour. Good luck, let us know what you find!

Cna class took me a month and was around 1600, very easy!

Does anyone knows of any angency hiring. My cna license is about to expire I will even voluteer. Please help nyc brooklyn, queens mahattan
