Clarification on the right type of volunteer work?

Published

Specializes in CNA.

I am going to volunteer at hospital near home sometime. My university that I will be applying to in a year or so.. requires 100 hrs of volunteer work in a long-term care/acute/or clinical setting.

My question is.. what positions would involve direct patient care or interaction with patients? Are the following positions (below) okay?

-Emergency Services

-Clinic

-Nursing Unit

-Rehab Services

It's really hard because most places require you to be certified before you can do some direct patient care. I would get your CNA if you don't have it already have it. What you're needing is 2 1/2 weeks of volunteer work if you're doing the whole 8-5 thingy.

My mistake, I didn't mention that I have certification as a CNA.

What I am trying to figure out is ..are these positions considered direct care or interaction with patients?

For Example:

-Emergency Services

-Clinic

-Nursing Unit

-Rehab Services

Specializes in Public health nursing.

I actually mentioned this in another thread, but if you currently reside in SoCal, there's a program offered by several hospitals that provides pre-health students direct patient care experience. It's called the Clinical Care Extender Internship Program:

It requires a 1 year or 240 hour commitment. They admit interns every three months, so it's definitely something to look into.

Good luck :wink2:!

Where I worked (not in California however) we had volunteers in the dialysis unit that would help patients with this and that. Palliative care is another area where volunteers have lots of patient interaction.
