City tech nursing program. Need advice.

Published

I was rejected from City Tech's nursing program for fall 2011. I have an A in psych 101, A in english 101, C+ in A&P 1, and C in math 1275. My cumulative gpa is 3.2 and my score on the Kaplan exam was a 71. I would like to try again for the spring 2012 semester, but I'm not sure of what I should do while I wait for the next Kaplan entrance exam this fall.

Will the C in math 1275 stop me from ever getting accepted? I'm considering taking math 1272 (Statistics) to replace the grade from math 1275. (I thought the next level of math to replace the grade would be a pre-calculus class since math 1275 was trigonometry, but the nursing catalog says math 1272 would replace math 1275.)

I'm currently registered for sociology 101 and A&P 2, but there's still time to drop and register for classes. Could taking these classes, and getting anything below an A completely ruin my gpa and any chance of getting into the program? Ofcourse I'd be trying my best, but my best may only get me a B+ and bring me down to a 3.0 .

A 3.2 gpa is their bare minimum, and I would definitely like to raise mine.

The options I've considered so far are:

1) Don't take any classes, pass the Kaplan exam, and hope a 3.2 gpa will be enough next time. (The passing grade for the Kaplan exam is a 60.)

2) Take sociology 101, A&P 2, and math 1272, work relentlessly to get three A's, and slightly raise my gpa.

3) Take sociology 101, and A&P 2, work very hard for two A's, and hope the C from math 1275 doesn't get me rejected again.

I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions as to what I should do for a better chance of getting into the nursing program.

Thanks~:o

I honestly think you need to raise your GPA. I would make an appt with a counselor and lay my cards on the line. Inform them how dedicated you are to make it into the program but want to know what the best option would be to increase your chances.

My GPA is a 3.2 as well (A&P 1: A-, Math 1275: B, Eng 1101: B, and PSYCH: B) and I scored a 76 on the Kaplan. I'm still waiting on an acceptance or denial letter. I didn't know they would substitute the Statistics grade for 1275... I have an A in Stats. A nursing professor told me that they look for strong grades in A&P and Math since those classes are the basic foundation for nurses and she also said a 3.2 has been the acceptance cutoff for the past two semesters. So, maybe you should ace A&P 2 and Statistics.

Do you have to retake the Kaplan every semester until you get accepted even if you passed it?

Actually, your pre-req GPA is a 2.94... that's the GPA they look at. If it's a tie breaker then they look at the cumulative GPA.

Kaplan with a 70

BIO 2311 -- B+

MAT 1275 -- B

INTRO TO PSYH -- B (using CHILD PSYH -- A instead)

ENG 1101 B+

Overall GPA 3.5
