Hello, I am new to this forum and interested in any advice out there - particularly from NP's and CRNA's. I am currently a new graduate holding a BSN degree working in an Medical Intensive Care Unit. I have been there roughly 8 months and am enjoying learning all that I can and the challenges that come with it. Although I have complete respect for Floor Nursing, I know that I want to go back to school sooner rather than later to advance my degree, ideally Fall 2018. This will give me 2 years experience and the ability to save money for grad school.
Initially I went into Nursing with the intent of becoming a CRNA. I still have interest in this but the NP route has also caught my attention. My questions for CRNA's are:
1) Are you satisfied with your career and would you do it over again given the opportunity?
2) What do you DISLIKE about your career choice?
3) Do you consider the stress to be worth the compensation (financially and satisfaction-wise)?
4) What are typical weekly work hours/shifts?
In regards to the NP route I have been doing some research and the thing that overwhelms me the most would be choosing a specialty. What specialty is the most versatile? I do not necessarily want to limit myself to a certain population or work setting. I would rather have a choice in working in any setting and with any population incase my interests evolve down the road as I am only 22 right now and just beginning my career. I have heard that the FNP and ACNP are good routes to take. Is one more versatile in the job market than the other? Also, any unbiased opinions on the DNP vs MSN for NP's? Finally, if you are an NP how would you report your satisfaction with your career choice?
Thank you very much for your advice!
