Chipola Nursing Program in Marianna, FL?

Published

Hey fellow nursing school hopefuls. My name is Jenn and I currently live in the Tallahassee, FL area. I'm new to Allnurses and was wondering if anyone had any information on Chipola's nursing program. I'm going to be reapplying for a bunch of programs and was told about Chipola, but I don't know much about it. Anyone have an idea of what their acceptance GPA was for recent incoming classes, or their application process? Feeling slightly defeated as I applied to a bunch about a year ago and was denied to all of them. I know a lot feel my frustration. Unfortunately, I cannot retake classes I took during my undergrad at FSU that are haunting me now. All I can do is hope that they give me a shot and hope that my scores on entrance exams are top notch...FUN! Any information would be appreciated! :D

Hi Jenn,

I don't have the answers to your questions that pertain to GPA and test scores for Chipola. Since nursing school is competitive and every group that applies is different. However from what I understand TCC, and FSU are difficult schools to get into in relation to GPA and test scores. I believe FSU usually has 3.5 as their lowest GPA that gets accepted and science grades are very important to apply.

I took most of my prerequisites at TCC and pretty well knew that getting in there would be a long shot, but possible cause I did pretty good. So I tailored my prerequisites to what Chipola required since TCC requires more classes to apply to the program from the start. So I applied at Chipola as soon as I could because I wanted to get started and get done with school as soon as possible, and I got in. Marianna has a smaller number of people that are in its district so the odds of getting in are better than Tallahassee schools for sure. Tallahassee is a college town and there are students from all over the state and a good bit from the rest of the country. So that's why I applied to Chipola as soon as I could. I start next week, and with all the classes I took I mostly have just nursing classes to take till I'm finished. Anyways what I'm getting at is that your odds of acceptance are much greater than the Tallahassee schools.

Thank you for responding with some insight. I have all the pre-requisite courses completed, plus extra chemistry, nutrition, human growth and development, etc. I also have an undergraduate degree in Social Work from FSU already. I'm trying to change careers. I have such a passion for the medical field and I'm torn between nursing and physical therapy. I'd love to be either, so right now, I'm currently trying to work full-time and go back part-time to complete other pre-requisite courses for DPT school. I figure I'll try my luck again with applying to nursing programs while I work and go back to school, and whatever happens, happens. Hopefully a path will open up and I'll find my place. I have a 3.3-3.4 GPA or so, I believe, from what I've looked at. I'm hoping that will be good enough. I'm working hard to get straight A's in the PT pre-req courses so it's bumped up.

I think your GPA should be fine.. As long as you have a decent HESI A-2 result and within the requirements for the HESI, as in the length of time since you took it and number of times taken.

The biggest pain with applying to Chipola is having to have all of the medical stuff done before being accepted to the program. I do think you should apply if you really would rather be a nurse, it doesn't hurt for sure. It will be a good while to find out since Chipola has a later cut off date for applications than the other schools. I wish you luck.

My HESI A2 score is pretty good. I could probably retake it and get a higher score, but it's an 82, I believe. Only took it once, and didn't really study for it. Took it April of 2010.

I'm actually going to get my physical done tomorrow, and I have my medical records on file as far as the measles shot and hepatitis series, etc. Not looking forward to waiting, but I'll go for it and see what happens. Thanks again for all of your help. Good luck to you as you start your journey to become nurse! =)
