Hi all, can anyone explain me in details about molecular, complete ionic, and net ionic equation please. I need help on my homework. So any help will be really great.. Thanks a lot.

Hi all, can anyone explain me in details about molecular, complete ionic, and please. I need help on my homework. So any help will be really great.. Thanks a lot.

Molecular Equation:

CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) ® CaCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

First step if to separate the ions and determine their charges (do you remember how to do this?). Remember to leave solids, liquids, and gases as they are because they do not dissociate. Once you do this you will have the total Ionic Equation-

Total Ionic Equation:

CaCO3(s) + 2H+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) ® Ca2+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

From here you need to look at which ions stay the same throughout the dissociation. In this case it is just 2Cl-(aq). I find it helpful to circle the ions that are the same on each side of the equation then you can see which ions you need to eliminate. You eliminate them because they are not directly involved in the chemical reaction. Once you have completed this step you get the Net Ionic Equation-

Net Ionic Equation: CaCO3(s) + 2H+(aq) ® Ca2+(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

Does that help? If not ask me more specific questions and I would be happy to assist as much as I can.

P.S. the formating of arrows and negative charge signs are jacked up and I don't know how to fix it...
