Not a lot of hospital units have the luxury to orient their new staff nurses into being a charge nurse. That is why we are trying to develop a charge nursing training course in our hospital. If you have any suggestions or any course you have attended that is done in your hospital, will you be willing to share the concepts? I'd be so grateful to be the recepient of whatever you can share.
Well then, how about basic management training. Things like, how to give verbal warnings appropriately without putting the hospital at risk, or how to de-escalate situations between co-workers.
It would be nice if in this course, the manager stood up and said, "I will stand behind your decisions"
That would be nice. That way, you don't spend the shift second guessing every decison that you make.
Also, orient the charge nurse to the policies such as ratios, admit policies (when they need to go to another dept) and how to handle and chart things like codes and rapid responses.
Formal training? Lol. I came to work one day and was told I was in charge. That was my training.
Me too. I was the most senior nurse on that night. It would have been nice to have a class though. I got the hang of it but a class on what is expected as a charge nurse would have been great.

Would you like to share any input on how you train your staff for charge nursing role, eg. formal class or training course?
