Chamberlain (PHX) spoke with an adviser today...

hi all

i had a meeting with ----, an adviser at chamberlain phx today.

i was told that "unofficially" most of my credits will transfer but i won't know until i apply, pay my $95, take the science portion of the hesi and have the "commitee" review my file. i am on the maricopa nsg wait list so i have a lot of pre req's done already. i do not have math 121 complete which is a requirement for chamberlain. she isn't sure if my chemistry will transfer, i think that's bizarre because it transfers to asu and maricopa cc's, also she isn't sure my sociology will transfer because it is a higher level than is required 0-o ...i feel like she didn't really know how to answer many of my questions which is unfortunate because who else am i supposed to ask?

so, for $95, i can apply and take the mandatory science portion of the hesi. i'm a bit bummed because i already took the hesi and did very well (reading 89%, eng 91%, math 96% cumulative score 92.8%) this is interesting as i feel like this is a way to get money out of the students. the $95 includes the science portion of the hesi test. ---- told me that they want to see if i have retained the info i learned in my science classes that i already took. ohhkaaay?!

next, ---- told me that i would eliminate one semester because i have already taken so many of the classes. so, how does that benefit me exactly? she was unable to really explain this to me and i am hoping someone here can...if the nsg program is 9 semesters or 9 blocks then my 2 years of schooling is only eliminating 1 semester? more accurately, chamberlain's semester 2 or block 2. i don't get to speak with a real nsg adviser til' after i pay the application fees and take the test and not until after the school evaluates my transcripts.

my main concern is this, how often does it happen where the fees are paid, the test is taken and then you find out most credits wont transfer and you feel you've come to far to turn back so end up re-taking classes you know you dont need?

i am a little lost here....

can anyone shed some light? ---- was hopeful that i would get into the oct class because of my hesi scores and gpa. sounds great! i just want to make sure it's all worth it.

also, i can start oct 24 but my first semester would consist of math 121 and transitions into nsg. that seems a lil' laxed for my first semester of nsg??!! semester 2 consists of all classes i've taken, so what do i do then? ---- said, i would move classes around and be able to graduate feb 2014. does that sound right? i feel like like its "do it yourself nursing", i pick my own classes and schedule?? that's a lil bananas if you ask me. i think i need more structure. i actually want to see the same faces everyday. people going through the same journey, study buddys. if i am wrong, please correct me because i am really interested in the program i just have too many unanswered questions that can be best answered by current students.

Hmmm... I think you are right to have some reservations about that program, with what Jennifer was telling you.

How long have you been on the Maricopa wait list?

If you've already been waiting for awhile, then I would just wait a bit longer, get placed, and graduate at about the same time. I think I only waited 3 semesters (18 months-ish) and then I was placed to start the next semester. Maybe work and save up some money...

I totally get wanting to get started NOW, but if you have to re-take classes you've already taken because your credits won't transfer to that school, that's kind of a rip-off. I think you were right on the money (so to speak) when you said that you thought it was a way to get more money out of students. Chamberlain is a for-profit school. That's not to say that they don't have a good program (I have no idea, never looked into it), but someone is definitely lining their pockets when you "have" to take THEIR additional classes.

Also, they won't even tell you what transfers until you pay them? Yikes, I'd pass.

I had an Associates Degree when I applied at Chamberlain and I had to take 1 class that didn't transfer- math 114- but everything else did. They went over my transcripts with me after I got accepted. I had to jump through a few hoops to get syllabi submitted to prove the classes were the same, but it was worth it to not retake A&P. I started in semester 3 of the 1st year, and there are some classes that are lame (NR100) but again it's a hoop they make you jump through all in the name of nursing. But here's some direct answers to your questions-

If you question any classes you believe you have already taken you can always submit the syllabus for evaluation.

For scheduling classes- your advisor schedules all your classes for you. In the beginning they will probably tweak and shift classes around so you have a full load for financial aid purposes.

There's a super duper long thread on here about Chamberlain Phx, I know that helped answer a lot of my questions when I started looking into them :)

I know this is kind of old, but when I applied two years ago, I had already taken my HESI at a community college in Coolidge, I just needed to bring the records over and that knocked down the initial fee since I did not have to take it. Most of my classes transferred. Like you, my sociology class was too high and I had to take the lower one, I also had to take economics. i know this is way off thread but i can't find info on this topic. So does anyone know how much Nursing Technicians/ PCT's make @ oro valley hospital? a response would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Oro Valley is a long way from Phoenix. You should find a thread that talks about Tucson stuff or Pima Community College.
