Certified Nurse Midwife Salary under ObamaCare?

Published

Hello, my wife is one year away from graduating at Georgetown University and will be a certified nurse midwife. We are having trouble finding how her salary might be affected by obamacare, good or bad. Any insight to what we can expect in the coming years as CNM salary goes, would be greatly appreciated!

Also, what can a new CNM expect to get coming right out of school?

Thanks everyone!

Too many factors go into answering this question. Full-time, part-time? Hospital-based? Clinic-based? OOH-based? Physician owned practice? Independent practice? Geographic location? Reimbursement requirements?

I believe the ACA had provisions in it that required insurers to pay 1oo% of physician payments to CNMs. So that would be good thing for nurse-midwives. I know recently there were some states where CNMs were paid 60% of what physicians were paid for the same services. This seems to be changing.

I also believe the ACA requires insurers to provide coverage for nurse-midwifery services. Or to have nurse-midwifery services included in-network.

But salary really depends on where the CNM practices, and the type of practice. A midwife in solo practice is going to spend years building the practice, and the net salary will be lower. A midwife working in a small, rural community will likely earn less than one working in an urban area. Hard to say what to expect.
