Does anyone have experience as a cedars sinai independent student volunteer? How hard is it to get into? I'm a music major at ucla (third year) starting my prereqs for nursing school (bsn or mepn/mecn). I know the ucla hospitals also have volunteer programs like cce...but many of the students don't recommend it. What else can I do to gain some experience before applying to nursing school?

Hey! I don't have an answer for you but I'm also looking for a volunteer job near ucla. I'm a third year ucla psych major. I'm also looking for a mepn program. just transferred here and don't really know where to start looking to find a volunteer position. Do you have any tips?? What are some hospitals around here that students volunteer at? It seems like ronald reagan is pretty hard to get into.
Wow! It's great that i have someone I can relate to! Well, I am going to sign up to volunteer at the UCLA hospital in Westwood. There is a application deadline for student volunteers by Jan 14th. For those who turn in the application on time are required to attend a orientation on February 3rd. Btw, I'm talking about the regular student volunteers program. My roommate is in this program, and she said that at the orientation you let the staff know which areas you are interested in. My roommate volunteers at a clinical research lab. She says theres probably a program to assist nurses. If there isn't...never hurts to ask! There is also the care extenders program which is more competitive because of all the cut throat pre-meds. But from what i've heard, many of the students in the care extenders do desk jobs. A lot of students in the program do not recommend it, even though it might have a better name.
This is getting kinda long. lol. So are you planning to apply for fall 2012? I'm just starting my pre-reqs. I KNOW...crazy. I'm actually taking PSYCH 10 right now! haha. And I will be starting a saturday anatomy class in february. Are you planning to take some of your prereqs at ucla? Biostats, and Communications 1 is open next quarter. I will taking those classes too. It's gonna be a crazy year for me but if I get rejected, I can always apply the following year with more experience! If you have any more questions..let me know!
Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to look into the volunteer program. I tried the care extneders program last quarter but didn't get in. It is crazy how many people are pre med! I'm thinking about taking a year off so I can work and save up money. I have my emt certificate but it is so hard to find a job in la. I'll probably take some pre reqs at ucla. Are you taking anatomy through ucla extension?? It's strange ucla doesn't offer anatomy and physiology during the year.
I am taking anatomy at a community college on Saturdays. UCLA does offer an introductory anatomy and physiology class over the summer. I have no idea how difficult the workload is. I assume it's not easy.

I am in the UCLA MECN program and I know a lot of students had volunteer hospital experience. I volunteered for a year in the ER at St. John's hospital down the street in Santa Monica and then for another year on a med-surg unit. I highly recommend the hospital for volunteering. Because it is a small community hospital, you do not get lost in the crowd. I felt very welcome there and that most people knew my name and appreciated my help. There was one time a staff member was extremely rude to me and I brought it up and was happy that they made a point to deal with it--they don't undervalue volunteers at all. The volunteer coordinator, Grenda, was very accessible and wrote me a great letter of recommendation for school. I don't think it is very difficult to become a volunteer there -- it might take a little while to get trained and all, but they will definitely try to give you your preferred assignment if you want to go to nursing school. I volunteered 1x a week for 4 hours, and I never had problems moving my schedule around if I needed to. The ER program is kind of separate from other volunteer areas, they screen applicants a bit more and the volunteers are more connected to one another. However, personally I preferred being on a floor because the staff was not on the run so much, allowing them to work with me more and therefore trust me with more responsibilities.
