Casuals as charge nurse?

Published

Hello everyone. I mainly work night shift in a Vancouver hospital and I used to have a part time night line for many years but gave it up just six months ago. So I am working casual now. Just noticing that I am still being assigned charge nurse almost every night that I am working, in spite of working with other regular nurses with a line. Nobody wants to be in charge at night as you have to wait for day shift to arrive and we all want to leave in time especially me as I have young kids I need to get ready for school. Not to mention the odd sick call at 6 am and the almost 'bullying' behaviour of day staff for you to stay and cover (another topic altogether). I emailed my manager and she basically said PCC can assign who is charge at their discretion. Is this normal with other units? Does your unit put casuals in charge?
