Case study of Mastectomy

Published

The client has just had a right mastectomy for breast cancer. The client has a peripheral IV with D5W at 150 cc per hour, a client controlled analgesia pump, pneumatic boots, a Hemo Vac, and a compression dressing over the right chest wall. Her arm is elevated on pillows. The report from PACU is that client is drowsy, breathing on her own, and received a bolus of morphine approximately 30 minutes ago.

1. What is the priority of care at this time and for the next few hours?

I think its to watch the client for adverse effects from anesthisia and from morphine.

2. What volume and color of drainage would you expect in the HemoVac?

I would expect pink to yellow which would indicate wound is healing. If its red it can indicate blood loss from hemorrhage.

3. What diet order would you expect this client to have?

Normal diet with foods high in protein. Example eggs, meat

4. What would you expect to find in regard to client's electrolytes and blood volume status?

The client's electrolyte status would be low after surgery that is why we would provide a high protein diet. The blood volume status would also be low due to surgery. I would keep my client well hydrated?????

If you see anything that's wrong or have suggestions about my answers they would be greatly appreciated.
