career advice

Published

Hi. I will be graduating with a BS in Nursing next month. I live in Lebanon with my Lebanese mother but I'm Brazilian. I recently found out that, as a foreigner, I can't practice nursing in Lebanon. In other words, I have no chance to get a licence and no chance to get any experience in the field.

I hope you can help me come up with a plan B for my career.

Thanks

I'm surprised that any country would keep a nurse, particularly one trained in their own country, from finding a job there.

Possible Plan Bs:

1. See have a Lebanese mother will allow you to become a Lebanese citizen. Pressuring people into citizenship may be the real purpose of those 'can't work here' laws. If you consider that, see if you can still keep your Brazilian citizenship. Two passports can prove very handy.

2. If you've nothing against nursing in Brazil, return there.

3. If you want to stay close to your family in Lebanon, look for jobs in the region. I imagine some of the oil states are not only eager and willing to hire foreign nurses, they also pay well. Knowing Arabic would be a big plus.

4. If nursing in the region doesn't suit you, look further afield, particularly in Europe. Unlike distant Brazil, in Europe, you'll still be a day flight away from Lebanon. Just choose the country with care. Greece is nearby, but everything in Greece is in a mess right now, particularly their healthcare system. Italy has a great climate. France has culture. Germany would pay well. You know English, so fitting into the UK shouldn't be hard.

You've got lots of options. You might also want to check out the Travel Nursing forum on this site for advice.

Thank you for you advice

You'd probably be even more surprised to find out that Lebanese mothers can't pass down their Lebanese citizenship to their children. The only way to become Lebanese is to have a Lebanese father or husband.

Another problem is that many countries ask for both licence and experience. And I don't have either.

But I will check all of these options.

Thanks
