I had posted this in a different thread and it was kinda off topic there...so thought I'd post it here:
I am a student still taking my prereqs for nursing school...please educate me about this if you are willing...
With all the talk of tape in this thread, and it sometimes peeling off the skin, it reminded me of when my daughter, then about 12 months, was in the hospital with RSV. She was there about four or five days. At discharge the nurse was removing the IV and when she took the tape off of her arm, it took the skin right along with it. Granted, newborn skin is WAY more delicate than a one year old's skin. But...I also changed her diaper as we were being discharged and she had a HORRIBLE yeast rash on her diaper area...bleeding, skin coming off. Of course she had been pumped full of antibiotics and I understand that causes yeast rashes. The nurse continued with the discharge and I asked if we were going to be given anything for the rash on my daughters butt. She said to just use Desitin. Umm, I don't think so. Demanded (yes, I guess I am one of those parents) that she call the doctor to get something for what was obviously a yeast infection. As for the skin being ripped from her arm, I was told to use the ointment my daughter was prescribed on that area as well, though I was told at the time she had had a reaction to the adhesive on the tape
Okay, so my question is, was the skin peeling off of her arm with the tape because of the tape or because that was also part of the yeast thing going on with her? I am curious because when my daughter has needed a bandage or something taped to her skin since then I tell them she is allergic to adhesive, BUT she has had regular bandaids and things on her skin with no reaction. I am thinking that was a yeast reaction on her arm under the tape...what do you think?

It was probably because the tape had been on her arm for 4-5 days. Yeast usually attacks nice wet environments, like body cavities, the skin next to a nice damp diaper etc. Although the skin under the tape could be damp it wasn't dark (assuming they used transpore tape). Was there an actual rash at the site as there is with a yeast ? The denuded area got better with the cream for the rash because it would have gotten better anyway. One way to tell, tell your daughter to put a big glob of tape on her arm and leave it for 4-5 days and then yank it all off and then see what happens

If I remember right (my daughter is 9 now) they used a white tape AND a clear tape, and no, it hadn't been changed or removed the whole time.
There was no rash, per se, around the area, but it did kind of look blistered, sort of like her diaper area...guess that's what made me wonder if it was more than just the fact it had been there so long or was an allergic reaction. I guess my arm would be a bit irritated, too, if I had tape on it for that long.
Think I'll pass on the adhesive experiment, though...
Thanks so much for your reply!

I concur with theopinion above. Adhesie allergies are brutal. They look like burns with blistering. It is possbile that she could be allergic to adhesive used for an IV, and not allergic to adhesive on bandaids and other tapes. However, it sounds to me that her fragile neonatal skin came off with the tape.
And ditto - think the yeast infection and rash are totally unrelated to the arm.

Thank you. I am glad to have an answer confirmed. It is also good information that she might have a different reaction with different adhesives, i.e. bandaids.
It was a horrid sight to see my baby girl like that. She has an older sister and I had never had such an experience with her.
I had seen yeast rashes on my older daughter, but none so extreme. I knew from past experience that Desitin was not going to help. I think the fact the nurse who was discharging us seemed to be rushing us out the door without addressing the problems caused by the antibiotics really shocked me at the time, too. Maybe she was just having a bad day.
Thanks again for your help.
